It's time for Pinvestment

Tuesday, 5 February 2013

I'm addicted. Ok ok I admit it, I am highly addicted to Pinterest! I am addicted to all the images that fill every nook and cranny of my computer screen and every last bit of space left in my overly stimulated inspired brain. It is not uncommon for my husband to stage pinterventions from time to time to encourage me to not to waste away the hours of the night.  But to me this isn't wasted time, it's a time to absorb new ideas, paint imaginary colour palettes, eat countless treats without consuming a single calorie, live the life of a stylin' fashionista with money to burn, pet Fifi my soft and fluffy bunny and travel to exotic locations around the globe.

Decorating on the home front

Sunday, 27 January 2013

My sister has taken a liking to cake decorating and I like to dream that one day we will own a super sister cake decorating business together and dominate through cake... It would be called 'Suga Sista's' or something to that effect... Well one can dream.

Earlier in the year a cake decorating store opened in town and it just happened to be right after I finished my TAFE beginners course. I started reading a lot of cake decorating books and spending 30 minute plus sessions at Latorta looking at all the equipment and materials I had been learning about. I am incredibly grateful that the store opened this year as it really got me on my way to cake decorating extraordinaire... Ok so it will happen some day I am hoping!

Latorta started running classes and I organised for my sister and I to attend the beginners round class which was taught by the lovely Helena from Luna Cakes. I really encourage you to check out her work, she is finishing up her masters at Planet Cake and her cakes are immaculate, highly detailed and perfect in every way. Yes I think I am in love with her skills and I also hope I can decorate with her skill one day.

This is my gorgeous sister Susie and I with our finished cakes and this was her first ever cake course!  Look how talented she is already!

My favourite part about cake decorating is the actual decorating, but ganaching a cake is right up there!

Planet Cake - beginner figurines

Monday, 29 October 2012

Now anyone who is into cake decorating will know all about Paris Cutler and her amazing company Planet Cake.  The first book I brought on cake decorating was the Planet Cake A beginner's guide to decorating incredible cakes.  The pages are filled with beautiful cakes for all ages and for all levels of skill and I love love love the recipes in them. And after looking at their website, blogs and after watching the tv series I was absolutely determined to attend the Planet Cake school and this was the year it was going to happen.  After arriving back in Australia from a church trip to Vanuatu I logged onto Facebook and saw a post about the Beginners Figurines course and enrolled a few moments later.

From here the countdown began and I can honestly say I was more excited than a kid throwing their Christmas sack at their parents in the attempt to wake them for present opening (not that I do that anymore...).  The day finally arrived and I arrived an hour early (partly because I was super excited but mostly because I had no idea where Balmain was situated!) and as I gazed through the Planet Cake shop front my heart leaped for joy, my stomach was crowded with flittering butterflies and I just wanted to wriggle my toes with excitement!  After following Planet Cake for some time online and on tv I was in front of their headquarters, I honestly felt like I was waiting to enter a world of super stars.  During my course I even found out that Paris was in the building (squeal!!) but you know whats even greater?!?!  I actually met one of the Planet Cake designers, Antony, and he talked to me about a cake design he was working on- like we knew each other.  This completely made my day and I was straight to posting my awesome brush with a celebrity on Facebook- life was complete!

I waited in the front room surrounded by beautiful cakes, twinkling fairy lights and candy striped walls, mesmerised by the surrounding beauty and waiting for reality to kick in, I was in cake decorating heaven.

In my beginner figurines class I got to make some seriously cute kawaii inspired little characters which I love so much I can't bear to part with them so they are sitting on my shelf.  Debbi Lee was a fabulous teacher and the class was very well organised with printed notes going into very specific detail including the weight for each part of the characters.

Now I'm not going to lie, this class was really stressful for me because there were so many amazing things to cram into one day but I finished and am really happy with how my lil characters turned out and I am looking forward to making many more that I will actually use on cakes I promise!

Here are the characters we made as part of the course, we followed a set style but changed elements of the characters clothing to make them a bit more personal.

Click through for more images of the characters I made at Planet Cake- and if you get a chance to enrol in the course you will really enjoy it.  It's a fabulous introduction into working with fondant and a super start to working on figurines.

Delicious beginnings

Saturday, 20 October 2012

Each year I set myself a list of goals, almost like a list of new years resolutions only instead of the usual lose weight, be healthy and so on, my list is full of things I want to try, things I want to learn and things I want to challenge myself with.  So this year I thought I would try out cake decorating... but not only did I try it out I began to learn a LOT and challenge myself even more.  And to be honest I am completely obsessed with cake decorating now, I just can't get it out of my head.  Weeks where I find no time to bake I crave the cake flavoured air particles that swirl up my nostrils and the off cuts of decadent mud cake and ganache that pamper my tastebuds... shhh don't tell my personal trainer!!

I started my cake decorating journey with an evening class at the local TAFE and this gave me a good taste for all the possibilities fondant presents. It was a fairly basic class but afterwards I was keen to try and make my best friend a cake for her baby shower and to be honest I had no idea what I was doing and started with a cake idea with a load of skills I hadn't learnt before... and after lots of research and planning it turned out ok and my BFF loved it (and couldn't cut it at the party hehehe).  But it was definitely far from perfect so don't judge me, I'm just a girl on an experimental journey really and I'm loving every moment of it.

So now I am continuing on my cake decorating journey and challenging myself each time and learning some fabulous tips and techniques along the way from cake decorating legends.

This is the first cake I ever made- a baby shower cake for my BFF - where the addiction set in and the requests for more cakes began.
